Battlefield 6 Secure Boot: How to Fix the Error and Enable It

Battlefield 6 will not start without Secure Boot because its Javelin anti-cheat requires it. How to check Secure Boot, enable it safely and fix the error.

Quick answer
Battlefield 6 requires Secure Boot because its Javelin anti-cheat runs at kernel level and needs to trust how your PC started. If Secure Boot is off, the game shows an error and will not launch. Check it in msinfo32, make sure the PC boots in UEFI mode from a GPT disk, then switch Secure Boot on in the firmware settings.

Battlefield 6 was one of the first big shooters to make Secure Boot mandatory on PC, and the error caught a lot of players out at launch. The fix is a firmware setting, and on most PCs built in the last decade it takes a few minutes.

Why Battlefield 6 requires Secure Boot

Battlefield 6 runs EA’s Javelin anti-cheat, which works at kernel level. A kernel-level anti-cheat needs to trust that nothing loaded before it, because a cheat that starts before Windows could hide from it. Secure Boot gives it that guarantee by refusing to load unsigned software while the PC starts.

So Javelin checks for Secure Boot before the game launches. If it is off, you get an error with a link to EA’s help page instead of the main menu. The same requirement covers RedSec, the free battle royale, because it runs on the same game and the same anti-cheat.

Javelin also asks for TPM 2.0. On Windows 11 that is already on, because Windows 11 requires it.

Step 1: check your PC

Press Windows and R, type msinfo32 and press Enter. In System Summary, look at two lines:

BIOS ModeSecure Boot StateWhat to do
UEFIOnNothing. Secure Boot is fine; look at the other fixes below
UEFIOffGo to step 3 and switch it on
LegacyOff or UnsupportedStart at step 2: the disk and firmware mode need changing first

Step 2: make sure the disk is GPT

Secure Boot only works in UEFI mode, and UEFI needs the system disk in the GPT layout.

  1. Right-click Start and open Disk Management.
  2. Right-click the disk Windows is on (Disk 0, usually) and choose Properties.
  3. On the Volumes tab, check Partition style.

If it says GUID Partition Table (GPT), move on. If it says Master Boot Record (MBR), Windows’ mbr2gpt tool can convert it without wiping it. Back up anything important first, then run it from an administrator command prompt, following Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows version.

Step 3: switch Secure Boot on

  1. Restart and press the firmware key during startup, usually Delete or F2.
  2. Find CSM (Compatibility Support Module) or Boot Mode and set it to UEFI only, with CSM disabled.
  3. Find Secure Boot, usually under Boot or Security, and enable it. Some boards also want the OS type set to Windows UEFI mode, or the default Secure Boot keys installed.
  4. Save and restart.

Run msinfo32 again. Secure Boot State should now read On, and Battlefield 6 will launch.

If Battlefield 6 still says Secure Boot is off

  • Restart fully. Shut down and start again rather than using a fast startup resume.
  • Check the keys. On some boards Secure Boot shows as enabled but in setup mode, with no keys installed. Choose the option to install or restore the default keys.
  • Update the firmware. Older firmware versions on some boards report Secure Boot inconsistently. A BIOS update from the motherboard maker often fixes it.
  • Repair the game. Repairing Battlefield 6 in the EA App or Steam reinstalls Javelin’s components.

Battlefield 6 setup notes

  • Battlefield 6 is supported on the EA App and Steam. Copies bought on the Epic Games Store also launch through the EA App, but Epic is not on our supported list, so ask in Discord before buying rather than assume it will load.
  • The game will not run without Secure Boot, so it stays on whether or not you use a build. Do not follow advice to switch it off; the game will simply refuse to start.
  • Our Battlefield 6 build is rebuilt every season, mid-season update and hotfix. Check live status on the status page after every patch before you load in.

The Battlefield 6 hub collects the rest of the setup and troubleshooting for the game.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Battlefield 6 with Secure Boot off?

No. Javelin checks for it before the game starts, and the game will not launch without it. That applies to RedSec too, which runs on the same game and anti-cheat.

Does Battlefield 6 need TPM 2.0 as well?

EA's Javelin anti-cheat asks for TPM 2.0 alongside Secure Boot. Every Windows 11 PC already has TPM 2.0 switched on, and on Windows 10 it is usually a firmware setting called Intel PTT or AMD fTPM.

Will turning on Secure Boot affect my performance?

No. Secure Boot only checks software while the PC starts. Once Windows is running it has no effect on frame rate.

I turned on Secure Boot and Windows will not start. What now?

Your disk is probably using the older MBR layout, which only boots in Legacy mode. Turn Secure Boot off and CSM back on to get into Windows, convert the disk to GPT with mbr2gpt, then switch to UEFI and enable Secure Boot again.
