VAC is the anti-cheat most PC players met first, because it has been part of Steam for more than two decades. It works differently from almost every other major anti-cheat, and the differences explain a lot about how Counter-Strike and Deadlock deal with cheaters.
What VAC is
Valve Anti-Cheat is Valve’s own anti-cheat system. It was first released with Counter-Strike in 2002 and now protects Valve’s games, including Counter-Strike 2 and Deadlock, along with other games on Steam that choose to use it.
The name also covers the ban. When people say someone is “VAC banned”, they mean Valve Anti-Cheat detected cheating on that account and banned it permanently.
How VAC works
No kernel driver
The biggest difference from Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye or Vanguard is that VAC runs in user mode, the same level ordinary programs use. It has no kernel driver. Valve has instead built its approach around everything else: delayed bans, server-side analysis and review by players. The page on kernel-level anti-cheat explains what that trade-off means.
Delayed bans
VAC does not usually ban the moment it detects something. It records the detection and bans later, often days or weeks afterwards. That is deliberate: an instant ban would tell a cheat maker exactly what VAC caught. It is the same idea behind every ban wave.
Watching the match
In Counter-Strike 2, Valve has added layers that look at gameplay rather than software:
- VAC Live watches matches as they are played and can cancel a match on the spot when it flags a cheater.
- Machine learning analysis of gameplay, which Valve has used for years to find aimbot patterns.
- Overwatch, where experienced players review the demo of a reported account and judge whether it was cheating.
What a VAC ban means
Valve’s own support pages are clear about the rules:
- A VAC ban is permanent and non-negotiable, and Steam Support cannot remove it.
- A ban issued in error is removed automatically. There is no appeal process beyond that.
- The ban applies to the VAC-secured servers of the game it was issued in, and can extend to other games built on the same engine.
- It shows publicly on your Steam profile.
- It stays with the account, whoever was using it at the time.
Steam also records game bans, which a game’s developer issues through its own systems rather than VAC. They appear on your profile in the same way.
How to check for a VAC ban
A VAC ban is easy to confirm:
- Your Steam profile. A banned account shows the number of VAC bans on record and how many days since the last one. Anyone can see it.
- The game itself. A banned account is refused on VAC-secured servers for that game, usually with a message saying so.
VAC compared with kernel anti-cheats
| VAC | Kernel anti-cheats such as EAC or BattlEye | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs as | A normal user-mode program | A kernel driver |
| Bans | Delayed, permanent, shown on Steam | Varies by game, often in waves |
| Leans on | Delayed bans, gameplay analysis, player review | System-wide scanning, plus the game’s own checks |
| Secure Boot or TPM | Not required | Increasingly required |
VAC’s lighter footprint is part of why Counter-Strike has always fought a cheating problem, and why Valve keeps adding layers that judge play rather than software.
VAC in the games we cover
Counter-Strike 2. VAC secures Valve’s official matchmaking. VAC Live and Overwatch review sit on top, which is why blatant play in CS2 tends to end in a report, a demo review and a ban. FACEIT is a separate platform with its own kernel-level anti-cheat; our page on VAC vs FACEIT compares the two.
Deadlock. Deadlock runs VAC and is patched heavily, with heroes, items and parts of the map changing from one update to the next. The Deadlock build is rebuilt whenever the game changes.
VAC and Elocarry builds
Our Counter-Strike 2 and Deadlock builds are written for VAC, polymorphic so their signature changes on every launch, and rebuilt when the game patches. Because so much of VAC’s strength lies in delayed bans and gameplay review, how you play matters as much as the software: keep settings believable and check live status on the status page before every session. No method is ever guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions
What does VAC stand for?
Valve Anti-Cheat. Valve first released it with Counter-Strike in 2002, and it now protects Valve's own multiplayer games and many others on Steam.
Is a VAC ban permanent?
Yes. Valve states that VAC bans are permanent, non-negotiable and cannot be removed by Steam Support. The only exception is a ban found to have been issued in error, which is removed automatically.
Does a VAC ban affect other games?
It can. A VAC ban applies to the VAC-secured servers of the game it was issued in, and Valve says it can also extend to other games that share the same engine.
What is VAC Live?
A newer part of VAC in Counter-Strike 2 that watches matches as they happen. When it flags a cheater it can cancel the match on the spot, with a message telling players the match was canceled by VAC Live.
What is the difference between a VAC ban and a game ban?
A VAC ban comes from Valve Anti-Cheat. A game ban is issued by the game's developer through its own systems. Both show on your Steam profile, and both are usually permanent for the game involved.
