Counter-Strike 2 averaged 805,638 concurrent players in September 2026 on Steam, and the October average so far is in the same place, at about 804,000. On 13 October Steam’s own stats page showed a 24 hour peak of 1,196,213. The all-time record is still 1,862,531, set on 12 April 2025.

That keeps CS2 among the biggest games on Steam every day. It also means the game is smaller than it was at the start of the year: the monthly average has fallen for seven straight months, the longest run of declines in CS:GO and CS2 history. Below are the numbers, month by month, and what they actually measure.

The live number swings a lot through the day. In the quietest hours it drops to around half a million (Steam’s stats page showed 506,028 late on 13 October), then it climbs back past a million at the daily peak. That is why the monthly average is the better number for comparing one period with another, and the daily peak is the better number for asking how busy the game feels when most people play.

For the minute-by-minute count, Steam Charts and SteamDB both track app 730 live. The figures on this page come from those two trackers and Steam’s stats page, up to the date at the top of the article.

CS2 monthly players: average concurrent players by month

Each row is the average number of people in the game at any one time across the month, from Steam Charts.

January 20261,070,444+79,267+8.00%

A few things stand out:

  • February 2026 was the high point at 1,084,095. Since then the average has dropped by about 278,000 players, or roughly 26%.
  • April was the sharpest fall, down 94,387 players in a single month.
  • September was the lowest month since early 2024. It was also the seventh decline in a row, which no earlier stretch of CS:GO or CS2 had matched.
  • Peaks fell more slowly than averages. March 2026 still peaked around 1.72 million, April at 1,564,830 and August at 1,331,274, the lowest monthly peak of the year so far.

CS2 peak players and the all-time record

CS2’s all-time peak is 1,862,531 concurrent players on 12 April 2025, the figure SteamDB recorded. If you check Steam Charts you will see 1,818,368 from March 2025 instead. Both are right for their own data: SteamDB samples the player count more often, so it catches short spikes that Steam Charts misses. When someone quotes the CS2 record, ask which tracker it came from.

Daily peaks still jump when Valve ships something big. The Rush Hour update landed on 22 September 2026, and the next day CS2 peaked at 1,450,705, its highest reading since June. The bump did not last. Within a couple of days the daily peak was back where it had been before the update, and September’s average still fell.

CCU vs monthly active players: what the numbers mean

Searches for “CS2 CCU”, “CS2 active players” and “CS2 monthly players” are often asking for different things. They are not the same number.

CCU (concurrent users) is how many people are running CS2 at one moment. Every figure from Steam Charts, SteamDB and Steam’s stats page is CCU. Anyone with the game open counts, whether they are in a Premier match, in a deathmatch server or sitting in the main menu.

Average players is the CCU averaged over a period. The monthly table above uses this. It smooths out the daily cycle, so it is the cleanest way to see whether the game is growing or shrinking.

Peak players is the highest CCU reading in a day, a month or all time. It tells you how busy the game gets at its busiest, and it reacts most to updates, majors and case drops.

Monthly active users (MAU) is how many different people played at least once in a month. Valve does not publish this for CS2. Third-party sites estimate it, and their guesses run from about 25 million to 75 million, which tells you how little they are based on. Treat any precise CS2 MAU figure as a model, not a measurement.

How many people play CS2?

The honest answer has two parts.

At any moment in October 2026, somewhere between roughly 500,000 and 1.2 million people are playing, and the average over a whole month is about 805,000.

Over a month, the number of different people who log in is far higher than that, because most players are only online for a few hours a day. Valve has not released a figure, so we do not put one here.

Why the CS2 player count is falling in 2026

The numbers show the decline clearly. The causes are harder to prove, and nobody outside Valve has player-level data. What the trend does show:

  • Updates move peaks, not averages. Rush Hour pushed the daily peak up by about 9% over August’s best, but the September average still dropped.
  • Summer is usually soft. July fell 6.92% this year, the second biggest monthly drop of 2026, in the weeks when schools are out and the esports calendar slows.
  • The slide started from a high base. February 2026 was close to CS2’s best months ever, so part of the fall is the game settling back from a strong winter rather than collapsing.

Even at 805,000, CS2 averages more concurrent players than almost anything else on Steam.

Frequently asked questions

How many people play CS2 right now?

Between roughly 500,000 and 1.2 million at any moment in October 2026, depending on the time of day. Steam's stats page for 13 October showed a 24 hour peak of 1,196,213, and the October average so far sits close to 804,000.

What is the CS2 all-time peak player count?

1,862,531 concurrent players on 12 April 2025, as recorded by SteamDB. Steam Charts, which samples less often, lists 1,818,368 from March 2025. Neither record has been threatened in 2026, where the highest monthly peak was about 1.72 million in March.

How many monthly players does CS2 have?

Valve does not publish a monthly active user number for CS2, so any exact figure you see is an estimate. What Steam does publish is concurrency: an average of 805,638 players online at once across September 2026. The number of different people who play in a month is several times higher than that.

Is CS2 dying in 2026?

No, but it is shrinking. The monthly average has fallen seven months running, from 1,084,095 in February to 805,638 in September, the lowest since early 2024. It is still among the most played games on Steam every day, and updates like Rush Hour still push daily peaks back above 1.4 million.

What does CCU mean in CS2 player counts?

CCU is concurrent users: the number of people running the game at the same moment. Every Steam figure on this page is CCU. A monthly active user count is different, because it counts each person who played at least once in the month, however briefly.
