Extraction shooters ask you to bring gear into a raid, grab what you can and get out alive. Die before you reach an exit and you lose the lot. That one rule makes every fight, every bag of loot and every walk to the extract matter.
This ranking covers the extraction shooter games worth your time in October 2026. Every game was checked for its current state: what has fully launched, what is still in early access and what has shut down. Below the ranking you will find the best tactical extraction shooters, the best single-player and PvE options, and a short guide to picking the right one.

What Is An Extraction Shooter?
An extraction shooter is a game built around one loop. You enter a map with gear from your stash, look for loot and must physically reach an extraction point to keep what you found. Die first and you lose your gear, your loot and the time you put into that raid.
What carries over between raids is the point. Your stash, money and progression persist, so a loss costs you something real. That changes how you play. You move slower, you listen more, and you think twice before taking a fight you do not need.

The Core Extraction Loop
- Deployment. Pick a loadout from your stash and drop into a shared map with other players and AI. Everything you carry is now at risk.
- Scouting. Learn where the threats are and which loot areas are worth the risk this raid.
- Encounters. AI guards the best spots while other players chase their own goals. You can avoid fights, start them or get forced into them.
- Looting. Every item you pick up raises the value of the raid and what you stand to lose.
- The extract decision. Push deeper for more or leave with what you have. This is the choice that defines the genre.
- Extraction. Reach an exit and survive the wait. Only then is your loot saved.
Extraction is the only win condition. Kills mean nothing if you die on the way out, and dying at the exit with a full bag counts the same as dying with nothing. If you want the mechanics broken down for a specific game, our guides to how to extract in Tarkov and how extraction works in ARC Raiders go through every exit type.
Gear Risk and Persistent Progression
Your stash is hours of play, and every raid puts part of it on the line. Risk scales with what you bring:
| Loadout | Risk | Survivability | Cost of losing it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget or scav run | Low | Low | Minimal, easy to replace |
| Mid-tier kit | Medium | Moderate | A few raids to rebuild |
| Top-tier kit | High | High | Can set you back days |
A player who extracts with modest loot every time will out-progress someone who pushes for maximum value and dies half the time. Discipline matters as much as aim.

PvP, PvE and PvPvE
| Aspect | PvP-focused | PvE-focused | PvPvE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main threat | Other players | AI and the environment | Both |
| Predictability | Low | High, patterns can be learned | Mixed |
| Stress level | High | Moderate | High |
| Suits | Competitive FPS players | Co-op and progression players | Players who like variety |
Most of the games below are PvPvE. The difference is how much of the danger comes from people. In Hunt and Marathon it is mostly players. In ARC Raiders the machines are the constant threat and other squads are the wild card. Tarkov’s PvE mode, Escape from Duckov and Road to Vostok remove players entirely.
The Best Extraction Shooters in Detail
ARC Raiders
ARC Raiders from Embark Studios is the extraction shooter most people should start with. It launched in October 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and its Steam player count peaked at 481,966 in November 2025. After a quieter spring and summer, the Frozen Trail update and a free trial window pushed Steam players back above 130,000 in October 2026, the highest in about six months. Our ARC Raiders player count post tracks the trend.
You raid a post-apocalyptic surface where the ARC machines are aggressive, varied and loud. Other squads share the map and can fight you, but confrontation is a choice more often than a certainty. That makes the game far less punishing than Tarkov while keeping the core tension of losing your kit. Third-person combat, clear feedback and readable maps make the first hours friendly.
Best for: New extraction players, co-op squads and anyone coming from mainstream shooters. If you are weighing it against the genre’s hardcore benchmark, read our ARC Raiders vs Escape From Tarkov comparison. We also cover ARC Raiders on our cheats side.
Escape From Tarkov
Escape From Tarkov defined the modern extraction shooter, and in 2026 it is finally a finished game. Battlestate Games released version 1.0 on 15 November 2025, on its own launcher and on Steam. The first season, Kord Breach (update 1.1), followed on 3 August 2026 with seasonal characters that sit apart from your permanent profiles. Our Tarkov wipe guide explains how resets work now.
Nothing in the genre is as detailed. Ammo penetration, armour classes, per-limb health, fractures and bleeds all matter. There is no minimap, no hit marker and no kill feed. A player-driven Flea Market and reputation-gated traders tie the economy together, and top kits can represent days of play that one bad corner can erase.
Tarkov is also the extraction shooter with the best PvE option. The official PvE mode gives you the full game against AI only. On Steam, the base Standard Edition ($49.99) is PvP only and PvE is the PvE Zone add-on ($29.99), while the Unheard Edition includes both.
Best for: Experienced FPS players who want depth and consequence above all. Not a first extraction shooter. Our Escape From Tarkov page covers the tools we support for it.
Hunt: Showdown 1896
Hunt: Showdown 1896 from Crytek is the most atmospheric game on this list. Teams track monsters across a Louisiana bayou, banish them and carry the bounty out. Banishing a boss reveals your position to every other team, so the extract becomes a siege.
Sound decides fights. Crows, chains, water and broken glass all give players away, and careful listeners track enemies they never see. Hunters die permanently with their gear and traits, so every engagement costs something. Crytek keeps the game moving: the Blood Testament event and Update 2.9 arrived on 8 September 2026 with a Blood Moon night cycle and a new weapon.
Best for: Duos and trios who like slow, tactical PvP and an audio-driven pace. If you are choosing between the two big PvP raiders, see Hunt: Showdown vs Tarkov.
Arena Breakout: Infinite
Arena Breakout: Infinite from MoreFun Studios is the closest thing to Tarkov you can play for free. It left beta with a full release on Steam and the Epic Games Store on 15 September 2025 and has run on a seasonal schedule since, with roughly one new season every three months.
You get realistic ballistics, a deep gunsmith, armour classes and a stash economy, with a cleaner interface, shorter onboarding and optional training missions. It removed its earlier pay-to-win elements for the full release.
Best for: Players who want the Tarkov formula at no cost, or a gentler way to learn it.
Delta Force
Delta Force from Tencent’s Team Jade mixes large-scale military combat with an extraction mode called Hazard Operations. It is free to play on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and mobile, which makes it the easiest way into the genre on console.
Hazard Operations drops squads of three into maps with objectives that guide where you go. Fights are shorter and more readable than in hardcore titles. When you want a break from gear risk, the game’s large-scale Warfare mode is in the same client.
Best for: Newcomers and console players who want a free, structured extraction mode. See Delta Force for our coverage.
Gray Zone Warfare
Gray Zone Warfare from MADFINGER Games is a tactical extraction shooter set on a large open-world island. It is still in early access. The 0.4 Spearhead update landed at the end of March 2026, and MADFINGER has tied the console release to version 1.0, which has no date yet.
Raids are long expeditions across jungle, villages and open ground, with realistic ballistics and faction tasks that guide your route. Players choose PvPvE servers or PvE-only servers, which makes it one of the best tactical options for solo and co-op players who want Tarkov-style realism without other players.
Best for: Milsim fans, solo players and anyone who prefers PvE. Our Gray Zone Warfare page lists what we support.
Dark and Darker
Dark and Darker from Ironmace moves the extraction loop into a first-person fantasy dungeon. Classes replace loadouts: fighters tank, rogues sneak and pick locks, clerics heal, wizards burst. Portals that open as the dungeon collapses act as the extracts.
The game is back on Steam with a free account tier and a paid upgrade. Its long legal fight with Nexon ended in April 2026, when South Korea’s Supreme Court upheld the earlier ruling, and Ironmace says development continues alongside a new project. It runs dedicated solo, duo and trio queues.
Best for: RPG and dungeon crawler fans who want extraction stakes in a fantasy setting.
Marathon
Marathon is Bungie’s sci-fi extraction shooter. It launched on 5 March 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at $39.99, and it peaked at 88,337 players on Steam on launch day. Steam numbers have fallen sharply since, with daily peaks around 4,000 in October 2026.
The moment-to-moment shooting is excellent and the game leans hard into PvP. Bungie is changing course: it dropped the fixed seasonal schedule, reset progression with the Nightfall Refresh on 6 October, and plans permanent PvE content, a social hub and a new runner shell in the Symbiosis update on 8 December 2026.
Best for: Players who care most about gunplay and movement and do not mind a smaller population.
Helldivers 2 (Extraction-Adjacent)
Helldivers 2 is a co-op PvE shooter where every mission ends by calling a shuttle and holding the landing zone. It is now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S after its Xbox launch on 26 August 2025. You do not lose your gear on death, so it is not a true extraction shooter, but the final extract delivers the same panic.
Best for: Co-op groups who want extraction tension with no gear loss and no PvP.
Best Tactical Extraction Shooters
A tactical extraction shooter rewards planning, positioning and information over reflexes. Realistic ballistics, slower movement, limited HUD information and armour systems are the common thread. These are the best options in 2026, ranked by how far they lean into realism:
| Rank | Game | Why it is tactical | PvE option |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Escape From Tarkov | Ammo penetration, per-limb health, no minimap or kill feed | Official PvE mode |
| 2 | Gray Zone Warfare | Open-world milsim, long-range realistic ballistics | PvE servers |
| 3 | Arena Breakout: Infinite | Tarkov-style armour, ballistics and gunsmith, free | Training missions only |
| 4 | Hunt: Showdown 1896 | Audio-driven positioning, slow and lethal gunfights | No |
| 5 | Incursion Red River | First-person modern military raids in co-op | Solo and co-op only, no PvP |
| 6 | Delta Force (Hazard Operations) | Class-based squads and objective routes | No |
Start with Arena Breakout: Infinite if you want to try the tactical style for free. Move to Tarkov once you want the full depth. If other players are the part you dislike, Gray Zone Warfare’s PvE servers and Incursion Red River keep the realism and drop the PvP.
Best Single-Player and PvE Extraction Shooters
Single-player extraction shooters keep the stakes, the stash and the loot run, and remove other players. You lose gear to AI, bad luck and your own greed. These are the best options for solo players in 2026:
| Game | Mode | Status | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Escape from Duckov | Single-player PvE | Released Oct 2025 | Top-down Tarkov parody with a story-led hideout. About 3 million copies sold within a month of launch. |
| ZERO Sievert | Single-player | Full release since Oct 2024 | Top-down 2D raids across a post-apocalyptic zone, with quests and bunker upgrades. |
| Road to Vostok | Single-player | Early access since April 2026 | First-person survival extraction from a solo developer. No multiplayer at all. |
| Tarkov PvE mode | Solo or co-op vs AI | Official, live | The full Tarkov game with AI-only raids. |
| SPT (Single Player Tarkov) | Offline single-player | Free community mod | Tarkov played fully offline, on an older game build. |
| Incursion Red River | Solo or co-op PvE | Early access | First-person modern military raids, no PvP by design. |
| Gray Zone Warfare | PvE servers | Early access | Open-world milsim with an AI-only server option. |
Tarkov PvE vs SPT
Both let you play Tarkov without other players. The official PvE mode runs on Battlestate’s servers, gets every update and supports co-op with friends. SPT is a free community project that runs the game offline on your own PC. It needs a legitimate copy of the game, it uses an older client build than the live servers and it lags behind official patches, but it supports a large library of community mods. Pick PvE for the current game and SPT if you want full control and mods.
Solo Play in Multiplayer Extraction Shooters
If you want other players in the raid but no teammates, Dark and Darker and Marathon have solo queues, ARC Raiders and Delta Force are workable alone, and Hunt lets you queue solo at a real disadvantage. Tarkov PvP solo is the hardest version of the genre.

Extraction Shooters Ranked by Difficulty
| Game | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Escape From Tarkov | Hardcore | No tutorial, complex ballistics, deep economy, punishing PvP |
| Hunt: Showdown 1896 | Hard | Permadeath hunters, audio-dependent fights, small margin for error |
| Dark and Darker | Hard | Big gear gaps, limited visibility, class mastery |
| Gray Zone Warfare | Moderate to hard | Large maps and realistic ballistics; PvE servers soften it |
| Arena Breakout: Infinite | Moderate to hard | Tarkov-like systems with a friendlier interface |
| Marathon | Moderate to hard | Fast, PvP-heavy fights |
| ARC Raiders | Moderate | Readable combat, PvP is often optional |
| Delta Force | Moderate | Structured objectives, familiar military shooter feel |
| Escape from Duckov | Accessible | Single-player, top-down, no PvP |
Extraction Shooters That Have Shut Down
The Cycle: Frontier from Yager is the best-known casualty. It closed on 27 September 2023. Yager said the game was not financially viable and blamed cheating for much of its player loss. The servers are gone and the game cannot be played, so ignore any list that still recommends it.
Which Extraction Shooter Should You Play?
- You are new to the genre: ARC Raiders, or Delta Force if you want free.
- You want the deepest game: Escape From Tarkov.
- You want Tarkov for free: Arena Breakout: Infinite.
- You want tactical realism without PvP: Tarkov PvE, Gray Zone Warfare PvE servers or Incursion Red River.
- You play alone and want no players at all: Escape from Duckov, ZERO Sievert or Road to Vostok.
- You love tense PvP and sound play: Hunt: Showdown 1896.
- You want fantasy: Dark and Darker.
Extraction shooters are not replacing battle royales. The two genres share the tension of a single life, but battle royales reset every match, while extraction shooters carry your gains and losses from one raid to the next.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best extraction shooter right now?
ARC Raiders is the best pick for most players in October 2026. It is on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, it is easier to learn than Tarkov, and its Frozen Trail update pushed its Steam player count back above 130,000 in October. Escape From Tarkov is still the best choice if you want the deepest, most punishing raids.
What is the best single player extraction shooter?
Escape from Duckov is the most popular one: it is fully single-player PvE and sold about 3 million copies within a month of its October 2025 launch. ZERO Sievert (top-down, full release) and Road to Vostok (first-person, early access since April 2026) are the other strong solo picks. Tarkov fans can also play the official PvE mode or the SPT mod.
What is the most tactical extraction shooter?
Escape From Tarkov. It has the most detailed ballistics, armour and health systems in the genre and no minimap or kill feed. Gray Zone Warfare and Arena Breakout: Infinite are the closest tactical alternatives, and Gray Zone Warfare adds PvE-only servers.
Are there free extraction shooters?
Yes. Arena Breakout: Infinite and Delta Force are free to play, and Dark and Darker has a free account tier with a paid upgrade. ARC Raiders, Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown 1896 and Marathon are paid games.
Can you play Escape From Tarkov without PvP?
Yes. Tarkov has an official PvE mode with AI-only raids. On Steam it is sold as the PvE Zone add-on for the base game, and the Unheard Edition includes it. SPT (Single Player Tarkov) is a free community mod that runs fully offline, but it uses an older game build than the live servers.
Is The Cycle: Frontier still playable?
