ARC Raiders and Escape From Tarkov get compared more than any other pair of extraction shooters, and for good reason. ARC Raiders launched on 30 October 2025 and became the biggest game in the genre almost overnight, while Tarkov finally left beta with its 1.0 release a few weeks later. A year on, both games look different from how they started.
This guide answers the question most people are actually asking: is ARC Raiders like Tarkov, and which one should you play in 2026? It covers the gameplay loop, difficulty, gear loss, wipes, PvE options, solo play, prices, platforms and anti-cheat, with a side-by-side table you can scan in thirty seconds.

Is ARC Raiders Like Tarkov?
Yes, at the level of the core loop. In both games you load into a raid with gear, loot the map, fight AI and other players, and try to reach an extraction. Die first and you lose what you brought in. That shared risk is what makes them feel related.
The difference is in everything around that loop. ARC Raiders is third-person, the main threat is ARC machines rather than other players, ammo comes in a handful of broad types, each item takes one inventory slot, and you can always run a free loadout. Tarkov is first-person, PvP sits at the center of every raid, ammo and armor penetration matter shot by shot, the inventory is a grid of shapes, and your wealth is tied to a player-driven Flea Market.
Battlestate’s own CEO summed up the gap. In an April 2026 interview, Nikita Buyanov called ARC Raiders “an extraction shooter for casual people”, adding that Tarkov wants “the most painful, most challenging, and most rewarding experience.” That is a fair description of both games, and neither side should take it as an insult.

Where ARC Raiders Stands in October 2026
ARC Raiders is the commercial success of the genre. Nexon reported 12.4 million units sold by mid-January 2026 and a cross-platform peak of 960,000 concurrent players that month. By its later 2026 earnings reports, sales had passed 16 million copies. On Steam alone the game peaked at 481,966 concurrent players in November 2025, and our ARC Raiders player count tracker follows the numbers month by month.
The biggest change since launch arrived on 8 October 2026. Frozen Trail, the 2.0 update, added the Pendola Pass map, new ARC enemies, two new weapons, a reworked skill tree and new gadgets including a grappling hook. Embark made the game free to play from 8 to 12 October to go with it.
Five days later, patch 2.1 opened a PvE Toggle beta running until 20 October. With the toggle on, players cannot damage each other, loot value is lower and some map conditions are switched off. Embark has said the test ends on the 20th and that it will decide what happens next from the data, so do not buy ARC Raiders expecting a permanent PvE mode yet.
Where Tarkov Stands in October 2026
Tarkov spent more than eight years in beta before version 1.0 launched on 15 November 2025, on the BSG launcher and on Steam at the same time. Our history of how Tarkov has evolved covers the full timeline.
Update 1.1 followed on 3 August 2026 with Kord Breach, the first season. It moved wipes onto separate seasonal characters, so your permanent PvP and PvE profiles are no longer reset, and added a free Battle Pass. Our Kord Breach patch notes and Tarkov wipe cycle explainer go into the detail.
Patch 1.2.0.0 landed on 6 October 2026 with a six-level Prestige system for the PvE mode and reworked PMC bots that now spawn at the start of every PvE raid. Tarkov PvE has become a complete way to play, which matters for anyone who likes the depth but not the PvP.
Core Gameplay Loop
An ARC Raiders round starts in Speranza, the underground hub, where you pick a loadout and a map before heading topside. The surface is patrolled by ARC machines that range from small drones to walking giants, and they are loud, aggressive and dangerous in groups. Other raiders share the map. Some fight, some trade emotes and leave you alone, and the mix of uneasy truces and sudden betrayals is a big part of the game’s appeal. You loot, decide how far to push, and head for an extraction point or a Raider Hatch. Our guide to how extraction works in ARC Raiders covers the options.
In Tarkov, every raid starts with a spawn that can put you in danger within seconds. You plan looting routes, listen for footsteps, manage the raid timer and choose an extract you have the requirements for. AI Scavs, bosses and PMC bots add pressure, but other players drive most of the tension. Survival feels earned because it is never guaranteed.

Difficulty and Learning Curve
Tarkov is one of the hardest shooters on PC. Ammo comes in well over a hundred types with different penetration and damage values, armor has classes and durability, damage is tracked per limb, and you treat bleeds, fractures and pain with specific items. Inventory is a grid where every item has a shape, and money flows through traders and the Flea Market. Most players learn by dying, then reading a wiki.
ARC Raiders keeps the tension and strips out the homework. Ammo falls into a few broad categories, each item takes a single inventory slot, and there is no player market to study. You still need to understand ARC weak points and when to disengage, but a new player can be useful within a few raids. Our ARC Raiders beginner’s guide and Tarkov beginner’s guide cover the first hours of each.
| Aspect | ARC Raiders | Escape From Tarkov |
|---|---|---|
| Learning curve | Gradual | Extremely steep |
| Cost of a mistake | Moderate | Severe |
| System depth | Readable | Very deep, layered |
| Onboarding | Clear and guided | Minimal, self-taught |

Combat Style and Realism
ARC Raiders is a third-person shooter built around movement, cover and reading enemy behavior. ARC machines telegraph attacks and have weak points, so fights reward planning and teamwork over twitch aim. PvP fights are short and tense, and the camera lets you peek corners in a way Tarkov never allows.
Tarkov is first-person and built on realistic ballistics. Recoil, ergonomics and weapon weight all change how a gun handles, and the right ammo matters more than the gun it goes in. Sound decides fights. A single shot to the head or thorax can end a raid, so patience and positioning beat raw reaction speed. If you want to see how deep weapon setup goes, our Tarkov gun builds guide shows the attachment choices in practice.
Gear, Death and Wipes
ARC Raiders takes the sting out of losing. Free loadouts cost nothing and have no cooldown, so you are never locked out of playing. Paid augments add a safe pocket, and anything in it comes home even if you die. Progress is not wiped on a schedule. Instead, the optional Expedition Project lets you trade your progress for a reset that carries over bonuses such as extra skill points and stash slots.
Tarkov makes gear loss hurt. Everything outside your secure container is gone when you die, though insurance can return items that nobody looted. Wipes used to reset everyone roughly twice a year. Since update 1.1 that reset applies to seasonal characters, which restart every four to six months, while your permanent profiles carry on.

Solo vs Squad Play
ARC Raiders is built for trios but works for solo players. Turn off Fill Squad and you can queue alone or as a duo, though there is no solo-only playlist, so you may still meet a full team. Many solo players lean on the game’s social side and avoid fights they cannot win.
Tarkov allows groups of up to five, and squads have a real information advantage. Solo PvP is viable but hard, and it rewards stealth and map knowledge. Solo PvE is the gentlest way into Tarkov: you keep the full systems and lose the player threat.

Cheating and Anti-Cheat
Both games have players who complain about cheaters, which is normal for any PvP game where loot has value. ARC Raiders runs Easy Anti-Cheat with extra layers from Embark that analyze player behavior with machine learning on live telemetry. Tarkov uses BattlEye alongside its own detection, and Battlestate said it banned around 25,000 accounts in the first quarter of 2026, a little over half of them for cheating and the rest for real-money trading, botting and other banned software. The studio has also said TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot checks are coming.
The stakes differ. A cheater in Tarkov costs you gear you may have spent hours paying for. In ARC Raiders the loss is usually smaller, because a free loadout puts you straight back in.
ARC Raiders vs Tarkov: Which Should You Play?
Pick ARC Raiders if you want extraction tension without a second job’s worth of research, play on console, or want to drop in for an hour with friends. Pick Tarkov if you want the deepest simulation in the genre, enjoy learning ammo charts and maps, and find the risk of losing everything the whole point. If you like Tarkov’s depth but not its PvP, Tarkov’s PvE mode is now the strongest option in either game.
| Best for | ARC Raiders | Escape From Tarkov |
|---|---|---|
| Beginners | Easy to pick up, cheap to fail | Very steep, minimal guidance |
| Short sessions | Quick raids, free kits | Raids need prep and time |
| Hardcore players | Moderate challenge | Highest skill ceiling in the genre |
| PvE fans | Only during tests so far | Permanent PvE mode with Prestige |
| PvP tension | Present, often avoidable | Constant |
| Console players | PS5 and Xbox | Not available |
| Solo players | Workable with Fill Squad off | Hard in PvP, comfortable in PvE |
| Realism fans | Stylized combat | Deep ballistics and medical systems |

Tarkov vs ARC Raiders: The Bottom Line
ARC Raiders is like Tarkov in the same way a pickup game is like a league match. The rules are related, the stakes are not. ARC Raiders brought the extraction loop to a far bigger audience by making it readable and forgiving. Tarkov remains the hardcore benchmark, and with 1.0, seasons and a full PvE mode it is easier to get into than it has ever been.
Plenty of players run both: ARC Raiders for relaxed sessions with friends, Tarkov when they want the full sweat. Frequently asked questions
Is ARC Raiders like Tarkov?
In structure, yes. Both are extraction shooters where you take gear into a raid, loot, and lose what you carry if you die before you extract. ARC Raiders is much lighter: third-person, three broad ammo types instead of Tarkov's long ammo list, a slot inventory instead of a grid, no player market and free loadouts you can run at no cost.
Is ARC Raiders PvE or PvP?
Both. ARC Raiders is PvPvE: the ARC machines are the main threat, but other player squads share every map. Embark ran a PvE Toggle beta from 13 to 20 October 2026 that turned off player damage, with lower loot value, and has not committed to keeping it.
Is ARC Raiders easier than Escape From Tarkov?
Yes. Tarkov's creator Nikita Buyanov called ARC Raiders an extraction shooter for casual people. Death costs less thanks to free loadouts and safe pockets, the systems are simpler, and there are no forced wipes.
Can you play ARC Raiders solo like Tarkov?
Yes. Turn Fill Squad off to queue alone or as a duo. There is no solo-only playlist, so you can still meet full squads of three. Tarkov also allows solo raids in PvP and in its PvE mode.
Does Tarkov have PvE like ARC Raiders' PvE test?
Yes. Tarkov has a permanent PvE mode against AI only, solo or in a group. It comes with The Unheard Edition or as the PVE Zone add-on for $29.99 on Steam, and patch 1.2.0.0 added a six-level PvE Prestige system on 6 October 2026.
Is ARC Raiders on console? Is Tarkov?
ARC Raiders is on PC (Steam and Epic), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with crossplay. Escape From Tarkov is PC only, through the BSG launcher and Steam.
