How crafting works in DayZ
No menu and no recipe book. Two items, the right prompt, and the crafts that keep you alive in the first hour.
How to craft in DayZ
- Take one ingredient or tool into your hands.
- Combine it with the second item, either from your inventory or lying on the ground near you.
- If the two make something, the craft prompt appears. Some pairs have more than one result, so cycle to the one you want.
- Hold the prompt until your survivor finishes crafting.
Many recipes use a tool instead of a second ingredient: a knife to cut rags or burlap strips, a saw to turn logs into planks. Tools lose condition as you use them, so keep a sharpening stone for your blades. The recipes and steps are the same on PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
Fresh-spawn survival
With nothing but your fists you can still get going. Knock two stones together for a stone knife, cut a sapling into a long wooden stick, then break that into wooden sticks. From there a hand drill kit and a fireplace get you warmth and cooked food, the two things that kill most fresh spawns.
Stay patched up
Cut any spare clothing into rags. Rags stop bleeding as an improvised bandage, and combine with wooden sticks into a splint for a broken leg. Keeping a few rags on you is the cheapest insurance in the game.
Build and blend in
Later on, rope and sticks become fence and watchtower kits for a base, while burlap strips and netting make a ghillie suit so you disappear into the treeline. Base building works differently from normal crafting: you craft only the kit, then build the walls in place with planks, nails and a hammer. Our DayZ base building guide lists the exact materials. Build a Fireplace Kit from wooden sticks and a tinder like rags, bark or paper. Place it down, add firewood or sticks as fuel, then ignite it with matches, a hand drill kit or a road flare.
How do I make rags or bandage a wound?
Cut up any clothing item with a knife to get rags. Rags double as an improvised bandage to stop bleeding, and combine with wooden sticks to make a splint for a broken leg.
How do I fix a broken leg?
Craft a Splint from wooden sticks and rags, then apply it to yourself. It eases the broken leg penalty while the bone heals, so you can keep moving.
How do I make a fence kit in DayZ?
Combine a rope with two wooden sticks. The kit is only the start: you then dig in a base of logs with a shovel and build frames and walls with planks and nails.
Is crafting the same on PC and console?
