The handful of crafts that keep you alive in the first hour.
Fresh-spawn survival
With nothing but your fists you can still get going. Knock two stones together for a stone knife, cut a sapling into a long wooden stick, then break that into wooden sticks. From there a hand drill kit and a fireplace get you warmth and cooked food, the two things that kill most fresh spawns.
Stay patched up
Cut any spare clothing into rags. Rags stop bleeding as an improvised bandage, and combine with wooden sticks into a splint for a broken leg. Keeping a few rags on you is the cheapest insurance in the game.
Build and blend in
Later on, rope and sticks become fence and watchtower kits for a base, while burlap strips and netting make a ghillie suit so you disappear into the treeline. Use the search above to trace any item back to what it needs.

How do I make a fire in DayZ?
Build a Fireplace Kit from wooden sticks and a tinder like rags, bark or paper. Place it down, add firewood or sticks as fuel, then ignite it with matches, a hand drill kit or a road flare.
How do I make rags or bandage a wound?
Cut up any clothing item with a knife to get rags. Rags double as an improvised bandage to stop bleeding, and combine with wooden sticks to make a splint for a broken leg.
How do I fix a broken leg?
Craft a Splint from wooden sticks and rags, then apply it. It stops the broken-leg movement penalty so you can move normally while you recover.
