DayZ Base Building Guide: How To Build Your First Base

Base building in DayZ looks complicated because the game never tells you what anything costs. Once you know the recipe, it is simple: a kit, a dug in base of logs, two frames of planks and nails, then wall panels on top. This guide gives you the exact materials for each part, the tools you need, and how locks, raiding and decay work in the current game.

Everything here is checked against DayZ 1.29, the version live through 2026, plus the base building changes coming with update 1.30 on 15 October 2026. It works the same on PC, Xbox and PlayStation.

What you need to build a base in DayZ

Materials

Nails are the real bottleneck. One wooden section eats 36, so grab every box you find before you start. If you are building alone, our guide for solo DayZ players covers staying alive on long gathering runs.

DayZ fence materials list

Every fence section goes through the same stages. Each part needs the one before it.

Totals per section:

• Full wooden fence: 2 logs, 18 planks, 36 nails.
• Full metal fence: 2 logs, 8 planks, 40 nails, 6 sheet metal.

The Fence Kit drops back on the ground once the base logs are in, so one kit can place several sections.

How to build a base in DayZ step by step

Step 1: Pick a hidden, flat spot

Build where few people walk: inside a treeline, in a dip, away from roads, spawns and military bases. The ground needs to be fairly flat or the kit will not place. Check the server rules too, since many community servers ban building near towns or military zones.

Step 2: Craft and place the Fence Kit

Combine a rope with two wooden sticks to make a Fence Kit. Take it in your hands, place it and rotate it to line up the wall. Plan the shape first. A small square of four sections with one gate is plenty for a first base.

Step 3: Dig in the base

Drop 2 wooden logs onto the kit’s attachment slots, take a shovel in your hands and build the base. This is the only step that needs a digging tool.

Step 4: Build the frames

Attach 4 planks and 8 nails, then build the lower frame with a hammer or hatchet. Repeat for the upper frame. A section with both frames is the point where you can still turn it into a gate.

Step 5: Add the wall panels

Load 5 planks and 10 nails for each wooden panel, or 3 sheet metal and 12 nails for a metal one, and build the lower and upper walls. Wood is cheaper. Metal takes far longer to break, so use it on the walls raiders will reach first.

Step 6: Make a gate

On a section with both frames built, attach a metal wire and build the gate with pliers. Check which way the gate opens before you add the lock.

Step 7: Lock it

Attach a combination lock to the gate and set your own code. The 4 dial combination lock is worth hunting for, since it has 10,000 possible codes against 1,000 for the 3 dial lock. Never use 000 or 1234.

Step 8: Fill it with storage

Tents, barrels and wooden crates go inside the walls. Split your best loot across several containers, and keep a buried stash away from the base as insurance.

How to build a watchtower in DayZ

A watchtower gives you overwatch on the approach to your gate. It uses the same building system as a fence.

1. Craft a Watchtower Kit from 1 rope and 4 wooden sticks, and place it.
2. Build the level 1 base from wooden logs with a shovel, pickaxe or farming hoe.
3. Add walls on up to three sides. Each wall frame takes 4 planks and 8 nails, then wooden or sheet metal panels.
4. Add stairs and a floor to reach the next level. A tower can go up to three levels, with a roof on the top one.

The tower is expensive in planks and nails, so build it after your fence and gate are finished. Most players put it inside the fence line, covering the gate.

Combination lock or code lock?

Until now, the combination lock (3 dial or 4 dial) was the only vanilla lock. Update 1.30, released alongside the Badlands DLC on 15 October 2026, adds an electronic code lock. Here is what Bohemia and early coverage have confirmed about it:

• It runs on a charged 9V battery and opens itself when the battery dies, so check it on every visit.
• While attached to a door or gate it cannot be destroyed.
• After several wrong PINs it locks out new attempts, and the wait grows with each failure.
• It fits existing fences and the new rebuildable doors, and Bohemia says it will be on all maps. It has not said whether it needs the DLC.

The 1.30 build menu also shows the tools and materials the next construction step needs, so you no longer have to guess.

Many modded community servers already run a code lock mod. Those mods needed a compatibility patch for 1.30, so your server’s lock may differ from the vanilla one.

How raiding works in DayZ

No base is permanent. In vanilla DayZ a base gets broken in three ways:

• Explosives. Explosives damage walls and gates. A 2024 raiding guide written for update 1.23 counted 2 plastic explosives to break a metal wall, against 5 claymores or 12 grenades.
• Melee tools. Sledgehammers and axes break walls and gates. It is slow and loud, but it needs nothing rare.
• Lock cracking. Raiders can sit at a combination lock and cycle codes. A 4 dial lock takes ten times longer than a 3 dial.

Community servers often add raid rules, such as raid windows or banned methods, so read them before you build.

How to defend your base

• Put metal panels on the walls that face roads and paths.
• Build two layers: an outer fence with one gate, and your best loot behind a second locked gate inside.
• Mount barbed wire on the fence with pliers. It hurts anyone who touches it.
• Attach a camo net and build in a treeline so the base is harder to spot from a distance.
• Do not log out outside your own walls.

Base decay and the Territory Flag

On default settings, fences, watchtowers and tents despawn after about 45 days if nobody interacts with them. The fix is a flag pole.

• Flag Pole Kit: 1 rope + 3 short sticks.
• Flag pole: about 10 wooden logs, 32 large stones, 60 nails, 1 metal wire and 1 rope, plus a flag to raise. Tools: sledgehammer, shovel or pickaxe, and a hatchet or hammer.
• What it does: a raised flag refreshes the lifetime of every object within 60 metres. The flag slowly lowers over time, so raise it again each time you visit.

Community servers set their own lifetimes. Some run shorter decay to keep the map clean, others let flag bases last far longer. Check the rules or the Discord.

Common base building mistakes

• Building next to spawns or roads. Traffic finds you. Go inland.
• Building too big too soon. A huge base burns hundreds of nails and draws attention. Start with four sections and a gate.
• Leaving one wooden wall. Raiders hit the weakest panel. Metal the walls they will reach first.
• Forgetting the flag. Without one, an unvisited base decays away.
