Patch day is the one day every cheat user knows to be careful. The game updates, the build goes into maintenance, and nothing works until it comes back. The reason is not that the anti-cheat suddenly won. It is that a cheat is tied to one exact version of the game it reads.
What a cheat depends on
Every cheat needs to find things inside the running game: the list of players, each player’s position and health, the camera, the local player’s weapon. Those things live at specific places in the game’s memory, and the cheat knows how to reach them.
That knowledge comes in a few forms:
- Offsets. Where a value sits inside a game structure, such as how far into a player record the health value is.
- Structures. How the game lays out its data: which fields exist, in what order and of what size.
- Functions. For internal cheats, the game’s own functions it calls or watches, such as the one that decides what is visible.
- Patterns. Distinctive byte sequences the cheat uses to find those things automatically.
All of it describes one particular build of the game.
What a game update changes
When developers ship an update, they rebuild the game from its source code. Even a small change can shift where everything lands:
- Adding one field to a player structure moves every field after it.
- Recompiling moves functions to new addresses.
- New features add new data that pushes old data around.
- Some games deliberately shuffle or protect key values on every update, so tools tied to the old layout break.
A cheat built for the previous version now reads the wrong addresses. At best it shows nothing. At worst it reads garbage and crashes the game. Either way it has to be rebuilt.
Anti-cheat updates are separate
The anti-cheat is a different piece of software with its own update cycle. BattlEye and Easy Anti-Cheat can push new detection logic without the game changing at all. That is why a build can go into maintenance on a day when there was no game patch: something on the anti-cheat side changed, and the build is checked and adjusted before anyone loads it again.
What happens on patch day
For our builds, patch day follows the same routine on every title:
- The build goes into maintenance the moment the game or its anti-cheat updates, and sales pause.
- The build is rebuilt for the new version: offsets, structures and anything else the update moved.
- It is tested against the new game and the current anti-cheat.
- Status flips back to live, and sales reopen.
Every build is polymorphic, so its signature changes on every launch as well, but that does not remove the need to rebuild after a patch. The two solve different problems.
Update rhythms in the games we cover
Each game patches on its own schedule, and knowing it tells you when to expect maintenance:
| Game | When the big updates land |
|---|---|
| Rust | The monthly update on the first Thursday of the month, which forces a wipe, plus hotfixes in between |
| Apex Legends | Each season launch, mid-season update and hotfix |
| Battlefield 6 | Every season, mid-season update and hotfix |
| Dead by Daylight | Every chapter, mid-chapter update and hotfix |
| Marvel Rivals | Every season, mid-season balance pass and hotfix |
| Deadlock | Frequent, heavy patches that rework heroes, items and parts of the map |
| Wardogs | Regular Early Access updates |
The per-game Wiki hubs cover what each game’s updates mean for setup and troubleshooting.
What to do after an update
- Check status before you load in. The status page and Discord show whether each build is live, updating or paused.
- Never force an old build. If the game has updated and the build has not, it will not work, and running it is pointless risk.
- Update the game first. A build rebuilt for the new version will not work on an old copy either.
- Expect a wipe-day rush. On games like Rust, the first hours after a forced wipe are when everyone loads in at once. Give the status a minute to settle.
If an update takes a build down, sales stay paused until it is back rather than selling something that does not work, and lost time is covered by the compensation policy.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a cheat to update after a patch?
It depends on the size of the patch. A hotfix that changes a few values can be handled within hours. A season launch or a major update that reworks the engine takes longer. For many of our titles a rebuild is usually back the same day, and the status page shows where each build stands.
Can I use the old version after an update?
No. An old build reads the wrong places in the new game, so at best it does nothing and at worst it crashes the game. Wait for the status to show the build is updated.
Why did my cheat stop working when the game did not update?
Either the anti-cheat updated, which many do on their own schedule, or the build was paused as a precaution. Check the status page before anything else.
Do I lose time on my subscription while a build is updating?
If an update takes a build down, we pause sales until it is back, and lost time is covered by the compensation policy.
