Dead by Daylight is ten years old and it has never been bigger. On the day this was written, Steam Charts showed 44,143 people in a trial at once, a 24-hour peak of 70,291 and an all-time peak of 168,845 set three months earlier. For a 4v1 horror game that launched in 2016 with an average of eleven thousand players, that is a strange and impressive shape for a player count to have.
This page collects the real Steam numbers, month by month, back to launch, and explains what moves them. If you want to know whether the game is busy right now, whether it is growing, or why your queue times change through the year, the answers are below.
Dead by Daylight player count right now
| Measure | Steam, 21 September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Playing at the time of writing | 44,143 |
| 24-hour peak | 70,291 |
| 30-day average | 51,365 |
| 30-day peak | 81,470 |
| All-time peak | 168,845 (June 2026) |
Two things to read into that table. First, the 30-day average is down about eleven percent on the previous 30 days. That is the normal September slide after a summer event, not a trend, and the same dip shows up in September 2025, September 2024 and September 2023. Second, a 51,000 average means the game is busier on a quiet Tuesday in September 2026 than it was on its busiest days in 2018.
The numbers change with time zone. European and North American evenings and weekends push the concurrent count toward the daily peak; late nights and weekday mornings in those regions pull it down. That is also when queue times stretch and matchmaking reaches further for players, which our guide to Dead by Daylight servers and regions covers in detail.
2026 month by month
| Month | Average players | Change | Peak players |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 2026 (to the 21st) | 51,365 | -11.1% | 81,470 |
| August 2026 | 57,800 | -18.4% | 99,887 |
| July 2026 | 70,813 | -0.4% | 121,937 |
| June 2026 | 71,077 | +39.2% | 168,845 |
| May 2026 | 51,051 | +4.0% | 86,738 |
| April 2026 | 49,104 | +6.2% | 77,398 |
| March 2026 | 46,223 | -16.4% | 84,502 |
| February 2026 | 55,296 | +12.2% | 93,286 |
| January 2026 | 49,288 | +27.6% | 96,633 |
June and July 2026 are the two biggest months in the game’s history by average, and June holds the all-time peak. The tenth anniversary event did what anniversary events always do for this game, only more so: the average jumped by twenty thousand in a month and stayed there through July. August gave some of it back and September gave back some more, which is the same curve every year. The January jump of nearly 28 percent is the other recurring feature, and it lines up with the winter chapter and the return from the December lull.
The March dip stands out because it broke a run of growth. Averages fell by about nine thousand between February and March 2026 before recovering in April and May. Balance patches and mid-chapter content usually land in that window, and a divisive patch tends to show up as exactly that kind of one-month drop.
Year by year: the long view
Yearly averages are the honest way to read a game like this, because single months swing by thirty percent on the strength of one event. These are the mean of the monthly averages Steam Charts reports.
| Year | Average concurrent players | Highest monthly peak | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 (January to August) | about 56,300 | 168,845 (June) | Tenth anniversary, new all-time record |
| 2025 | about 45,500 | 120,430 (June) | First year to beat the 2021 average |
| 2024 | about 37,200 | 99,859 (July) | Steady climb out of the 2023 trough |
| 2023 | about 33,500 | 87,747 (June) | The flattest year on record |
| 2022 | about 36,400 | 96,390 (June) | June spike, then a slow slide |
| 2021 | about 44,800 | 105,052 (June) | Resident Evil chapter sets the record that stood four years |
| 2020 | about 36,000 | 77,347 (October) | Pandemic year, high floor, no huge spike |
| 2019 | about 20,000 | 75,044 (May) | Still a mid-sized game |
| 2018 | about 17,000 | 62,756 (September) | First real growth year |
| 2017 | about 12,000 | 38,698 (September) | Post-launch dip and recovery |
| 2016 (June to December) | about 14,000 | 42,895 (December) | Launch |
The story in one line: the game grew until 2021, drifted for two years, then grew again faster than ever. A 2023 average of 33,500 looked like the beginning of a long decline at the time. Three years later the average has gone up by two thirds. Very few live service games a decade old can say that, and none of the asymmetric horror games that launched to compete with it can.
The June effect
Every June since 2021 has been the busiest month of its year. The anniversary broadcast, a licensed chapter and free login rewards all land in the same fortnight, and the whole community comes back at once.
| June | Average players | Peak players | Change from May |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 2026 | 71,077 | 168,845 | +39% |
| June 2025 | 56,490 | 120,430 | +34% |
| June 2024 | 44,806 | 83,741 | +25% |
| June 2023 | 40,113 | 87,747 | +30% |
| June 2022 | 49,142 | 96,390 | +53% |
| June 2021 | 48,769 | 105,052 | +20% |
The peaks tell you how big the event was; the averages tell you how much of the crowd stayed. June 2022 had the biggest percentage jump and the fastest fall, with July 2022 down a quarter on June. June 2026 held its average almost perfectly into July, which is the healthiest event retention the game has ever shown.
If you are picking a month to learn a new killer, June is the worst one. Lobbies are full of returning players and the matchmaking spread is wide. Spin the free killer randomizer in February or October instead, when the population is stable and the lobbies are mostly regulars.
The September slide and the December floor
The other two fixtures of the calendar are the autumn drop and the December low.
September has fallen against August in every year on this table: about 16 percent in 2023, 6 percent in 2024, 20 percent in 2025 and 11 percent so far in 2026. The summer crowd goes back to school and work, the anniversary rewards are spent, and the September chapter is usually smaller than the June one.
December is where the year bottoms out. December 2024 averaged 31,375, the lowest month since early 2024; December 2025 averaged 38,628, down 18 percent on November. Then January arrives with a new chapter and the count jumps by ten to fifteen thousand. If you only ever look at the game in December you will think it is dying. Look again in February.
What the numbers do not show
Steam is one platform. Dead by Daylight is on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store, all of which share lobbies with Steam through cross-play, and none of which publish a concurrent player count. Console players make up a large share of any lobby, which you will notice from the platform icons next to names. The true concurrent population is well above the Steam figure; nobody outside Behaviour knows by how much, and any site quoting a precise all-platform number is guessing.
Concurrent players are also not the same as active players. A 51,000 average means fifty-one thousand people in a trial at a typical moment, which implies several hundred thousand distinct people playing across a week. Behaviour has said in the past that the game has over sixty million players in total, though that counts every account that ever launched it.
Finally, Steam Charts samples Steam’s own counter, which briefly drops to zero during Steam’s weekly maintenance on Tuesdays. That is the spike to zero in the seven-day chart and it is not a server outage. If you are trying to work out whether a bad session was you, the servers or the game, our guide to how Dead by Daylight’s servers work has the checklist.
Why the count matters for how the game plays
A bigger population changes the game you are queued into.
More players means tighter matchmaking. With 50,000 people online, the system can find four survivors and a killer close to your skill and your region in seconds. With 15,000, as in 2018, it had to reach across regions and skill brackets, which is why old players remember lobbies that swung between easy and impossible.
More players also means more cheaters in absolute terms, even if the share stays the same. A record summer brings back players who have not touched the game for years, and it brings out everyone selling something to them. The honest picture of what cheating looks like at this scale is in our guide to spotting a cheater in Dead by Daylight, and what Behaviour actually does about it is in the anti-cheat and bans explainer.
And a record population is the best argument for learning the fundamentals. The players filling the June lobbies are not the ones who quit in 2023; they are the ones who stayed and got better. Ten minutes a day on the skill check trainer and a read of the killer tier list before you queue is a cheaper edge than most people think. For the players who want more than that, the Dead by Daylight cheat exists, and the ESP page is honest about what it does and does not do in a lobby this size.
How to read a player count chart yourself
Three habits keep you from misreading Steam Charts.
Compare a month to the same month last year, not to last month. September will always look bad next to August. September 2026 against September 2025 is up by about four thousand average players, which is the number that matters.
Ignore single-day peaks unless you are measuring an event. A 168,845 peak is a fact about one evening in June. The 71,077 average for that month is a fact about the month.
Watch the yearly average, and watch the December floor. If the December low is higher than the previous December, the game grew; if the yearly average is higher than the previous year, it grew a lot. By both measures, Dead by Daylight in 2026 is growing.
We will update this page after each major chapter. The date at the top is the date the numbers were read.
Frequently asked questions
How many people play Dead by Daylight right now?
On Steam, roughly 44,000 at the time of writing in September 2026, with a peak of about 70,000 over the previous 24 hours. Weekend evenings in Europe and North America run higher than that, weekday mornings run lower. Add console, Epic and Microsoft Store players and the real number is a good deal larger, but only Steam publishes its count.
What is the Dead by Daylight all-time peak player count?
168,845 concurrent players on Steam, set in June 2026 during the tenth anniversary event. That beat the June 2025 peak of 120,430 and the June 2021 peak of 105,052, which had stood as the record for four years.
Is Dead by Daylight dying in 2026?
No. The Steam average for 2026 so far is around 56,000 concurrent players, the highest yearly average in the game's history, and every year since 2023 has averaged more than the one before. The September dip after a summer peak happens every year and is not a sign of decline.
Why does the player count spike every June?
Behaviour runs the anniversary event in June, usually alongside a big licensed chapter and free login rewards. Every June since 2021 has been the busiest month of its year on Steam, and the all-time peaks in 2021, 2025 and 2026 were all set in June.
Does the Steam player count include console players?
No. Steam Charts only sees Steam. PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store players all play in the same cross-platform lobbies but are not in these numbers, so the true concurrent population is higher than any figure on this page.
What was the lowest point for Dead by Daylight's player count?
The launch months in 2016 and early 2017 were the lowest, with monthly averages under 10,000 in mid 2017. In the modern era the low point was January 2024 at about 28,000 average concurrent players, before the game climbed back to new records.
How does Dead by Daylight's player count compare to other asymmetric horror games?
It is the only one that has held a five-figure Steam average for a decade. Friday the 13th, Evil Dead, VHS and Texas Chain Saw Massacre all launched, peaked and fell away within a couple of years, while Dead by Daylight set its all-time record ten years after release.
How often are these numbers updated?
Steam Charts updates continuously and this page is refreshed at each major chapter. The date at the top of the article is the date the figures were read; check the source link for live numbers.
