Quick answer
Marvel Rivals counters work at the comp level, not the player level. Dive assassins like Black Panther and Spider-Man lose to crowd control and grouped peel, so Peni Parker, Groot and The Thing shut them down. Flyers like Iron Man and Storm fall to snipers and mobile divers, snipers lose to dive, and heal-heavy Luna Snow and Mantis backlines crack under burst assassins such as Psylocke and Magik. Swap at spawn, keep a 2-2-2 shape, and never break a Team-Up for a marginal counter.

Nobody in Marvel Rivals gets hard-countered by a single hero. They get countered by a comp. That is the first thing to get straight, because most people who search for “who counters Black Panther” are looking for one swap that fixes their game, and the honest answer is that Black Panther gets beaten by three players standing within peel range of each other. This guide covers how countering works in a 6v6 hero shooter, the answers to the five things people lose to most, a weak-against table for the twelve heroes you see most in ranked, and when a swap is the wrong call. The counter data comes from the same hero file that runs our free tools. We describe effects rather than quote numbers, because numbers move every season and the pattern does not.

How Marvel Rivals counters actually work

Three ideas do most of the work.

You counter a comp, not a player

A hero shooter counter is a shape mismatch. Dive beats snipers because snipers need space and dive takes it away. Crowd control beats dive because divers need to leave and control stops them leaving. Poke beats crowd control tanks because they have to walk into the poke to use their tools. When you swap, you are trying to change the shape of the fight, not win a 1v1 with the guy who has been killing you.

The enemy Black Panther is rarely the problem. The problem is that your Strategists are standing apart and nobody turns when the dive lands. Swapping to a hero listed as strong against dive fixes some of that. Fixing your positioning fixes more.

The swap window at spawn

You can change hero at any time from spawn. In practice you get three clean windows: the setup phase before the round, the walk back after a death, and the pause after a lost team fight when everyone respawns together. Swapping while alive mid-push means your team fights five against six while you walk back.

The best time to counter-swap is after a lost fight, once you have seen the whole enemy comp. Do not swap after the first death. One death is a duel. Three deaths to the same pattern is a comp problem.

Roles counter roles

The role triangle holds across almost every matchup in the game. Divers (mobile Duelists and dive Vanguards) beat backliners: snipers, flyers and Strategists. Crowd control and zone Vanguards beat divers: Peni Parker, Groot, The Thing and Doctor Strange all appear in the data as strong against dive. Ranged poke beats zone Vanguards, because they have to hold a spot and a spot is easy to shoot. And dive beats ranged poke, which closes the loop. Remember the triangle and you know where to look before you open hero select.

Who counters dive assassins: Black Panther, Spider-Man, Psylocke and Magik

Dive is what people lose to most, and the matchup where a swap does the most work. Look at what the four divers are weak against. Black Panther: CC-heavy tanks and group peel. Spider-Man: CC-heavy comps, and Peni Parker by name. Psylocke: AoE poke and hard CC. Magik: burst comps and AoE CC. The theme is obvious. Divers need to arrive, kill, and leave. Crowd control removes the leaving part.

Peni Parker is the cleanest answer. She is listed as strong against dive comps and close-range Duelists, and Spider-Man’s weak-against list names her outright. Her nest turns your backline into a place divers die. Put your Strategists in it and the Spider-Man either stops diving or stops living.

Groot is strong against dive comps and high-mobility heroes. His walls do something no other Vanguard can: they split the diver from their escape route. A Black Panther who dashes in and finds a wall behind him has to fight a Vanguard and two Strategists at once, which is the one fight he does not want.

The Thing is strong against close-range brawlers and divers. He does not need to hit an ability to work. He is simply the wrong thing for an assassin to be near.

Two more worth knowing. Doctor Strange is strong against dive comps and his shield blanks the opening burst. Invisible Woman is strong against dive comps and burst damage, and is often the better swap on a team that already has a solid main tank.

None of these work if your backline spreads out. Countering dive is a group activity.

How to counter aerial heroes: Iron Man, Storm and Human Torch

Flyers win when nobody on your team can hit them. That is the whole matchup. Iron Man’s weak-against list is anti-air and high-mobility assassins. Human Torch’s is anti-air and long-range snipers. Storm’s is high-mobility divers and shields.

Hawkeye and Black Widow are the anti-air answer. Both are strong against stationary targets, and a flyer hovering above the fight is closer to stationary than it looks. One good hit on Iron Man in the air changes how the enemy plays, because he has to land or leave.

Spider-Man and Black Panther are the mobile answer. Storm’s data lists high-mobility divers as her main weakness, and a Spider-Man who can reach her in the air removes her zone control entirely. This is the swap when nobody on the team wants to play a sniper.

Magneto deserves a mention because his strong-against list includes iron targets and projectile heroes. Against an Iron Man who is carrying, a Magneto swap gives your frontline a tool that works on the flyer rather than hoping a Duelist looks up. Human Torch also has Groot on his strong-against list, so if you are the Groot and the enemy has a Torch, think about it.

Who counters snipers: Hawkeye and Black Widow

Hawkeye is weak against dive comps and close-range brawlers. Black Widow is weak against dive comps and shields. Both are strong against stationary, low-health targets, which describes a Strategist standing still to heal.

Black Panther and Psylocke are the direct answer. Both are strong against isolated targets, and a sniper is isolated by definition. The fight is decided by the gap close, which is why snipers spend the match looking for a spot divers cannot reach.

Venom is the Vanguard version. He is strong against isolated targets and backliners, and unlike a Duelist diver he can take the hit on the way in. A Venom who commits onto a Hawkeye does not need to kill him, he needs to stop him shooting for long enough that your team wins the fight.

Doctor Strange and Magneto cover the shield side. Black Widow’s weak-against list includes shields for a reason. A shield on the approach means the first shot goes into a barrier and by the time the second is lined up, the diver has arrived.

A Hawkeye with a Peni Parker and a Groot in front of him is a very different problem from a Hawkeye whose Vanguards have left him alone. You counter the comp.

Beating healing-heavy comps: Luna Snow and Mantis

A Luna Snow and Mantis backline is built for long fights. Both are strong against attrition battles and sustained fights, and both are weak against burst assassins and dive comps. Their healing is built around a fight that lasts, so the answer is to make the fight not last.

Psylocke and Magik are the burst answers. Psylocke is strong against isolated targets and low-health supports. Magik is strong against isolated supports and low-health targets. They need one Strategist to be a step too far from the other.

Venom is again the Vanguard version. Strong against backliners, and able to survive the trip. A Venom dive that pulls one Strategist’s attention is often enough for your Duelists to finish the other.

The Midnight Sons Team-Up (Blade, Moon Knight, Elsa Bloodstone) is the composition answer. In the site data it is flagged as strong against heavy-healing comps, with occult damage and resistance to life-drain. With two of the three on your team you are set up for this matchup without swapping anyone. Our post on Marvel Rivals Team-Ups explained goes through the whole list and which ones are worth building around.

One warning. Trading a Strategist for a diver to beat a heal-heavy comp leaves you with one healer against two, which loses the attrition fight you were trying to avoid. Swap a Duelist, not a support.

Cracking shield tanks: Doctor Strange and Magneto

Nobody dies to a Doctor Strange shield. They just spend the whole match shooting it. Strange is weak against long-range poke and silences. Magneto is weak against non-metal abilities and burst damage.

Elsa Bloodstone and Squirrel Girl are the tank shredders. Elsa is strong against large hitbox targets and tanks. Squirrel Girl is strong against stationary targets and tanks, and a Vanguard holding a shield is stationary. Both have shields on their own weak-against list, so hit the Vanguard from a side the shield is not facing.

Storm and Thor are strong against ground tanks. Storm’s area denial punishes a Vanguard for holding a spot, and Thor is one of the few Vanguards who can go through a shield line rather than into it.

Rogue is strong against ability-reliant heroes and tanks, and both shield tanks are as ability-reliant as Vanguards get. Scarlet Witch is strong against ability-dependent heroes for the same reason. When the shield is down, Strange is a large, slow target.

Shield tanks are a poke matchup, not a dive matchup. Swapping to a diver against a double-Vanguard shield comp usually feeds. Swap to poke, spread damage across angles, and let the shield break.

Marvel Rivals counter picks: the twelve most-picked heroes

Weak against is what to swap to if they are beating you. Strong against is what to avoid feeding them.

Read it as pairs. If Hela is carrying and you have no shield, Magneto or Doctor Strange are the answer. If Psylocke is killing your Strategists, AoE poke and hard crowd control point you at Peni Parker, Groot or Storm. When not to swap

Counter-picking has a cost.

Do not break a Team-Up for a marginal counter. If your Spider-Man and Peni Parker are running Web Warriors, or your Iron Man is sitting on Gamma Overdrive with a Bruce Banner, swapping one of them for a slightly better counter throws away a passive that helps the whole team. The counter gain is usually smaller than the Team-Up loss.

Do not swap to a hero you cannot play. A Peni Parker who does not know where to put the nest is not a dive counter. She is a slow Vanguard with no shield. If your best answer to dive is a hero you have ten minutes on, the better swap is a hero you know that at least does not feed. The which hero should I play quiz is a quick way to find heroes that suit how you already play, which is where a swap pool should start.

Do not swap into a broken role balance. Going from 2-2-2 to 1-3-2 because a third Duelist “counters” the enemy flyer means one Vanguard against a comp that was already winning.

Do not swap if you are winning. People still do it, usually because one enemy had a good fight against them. Countering is for when the comp is losing, not the duel.

If you are trying to work out which heroes you should actually have in your pool for swapping, the hero randomizer with the difficulty filter on forces you onto unfamiliar heroes in quick play before you need them in ranked. And our list of the worst Marvel Rivals characters is worth a look before you commit practice time to a hero who is a counter on paper but a liability in the current patch.

How the free tools help with a counter-swap

Two free tools do the checking, no account needed.

The Marvel Rivals team builder lets you put in your six and the enemy six, and it flags role balance, synergy and active Team-Ups. For counter-picking, change one hero and see whether the comp still holds. If a swap drops you to one Vanguard or quietly turns off a Team-Up, you see it before you lock in.

The Marvel Rivals tier list ranks every hero by role and meta strength, and the reason it matters for counters is that a counter that sits in C tier is often worse than a neutral hero in S tier. Counter-picking is a small edge. Meta strength is a bigger one. If both point the same way, swap. If they disagree, think.

What ESP and aimbot change about countering

Less than people think, and in specific places. Countering is a composition problem, and no cheat changes what heroes the enemy picked. What the Elocarry Marvel Rivals cheat changes is the two things that decide whether a counter applies: information and reaction time.

Information. The hard part of the dive matchup is that the dive arrives before you know it is coming. The hero ESP with health bars shows where the Black Panther is before he lands, which turns “react to the dive” into “turn around before the dive”. It also shows the Hawkeye through the wall, which matters because the sniper matchup is all about the approach.

Class priority. The aimbot’s class priority setting works per role, so you can tell it to target Strategists first, Duelists second and Vanguards last. Against Luna Snow and Mantis, that is the anti-healing counter applied automatically: your damage goes at the healers whether or not you had the discipline to pick them out. Per-hero profiles mean your Psylocke settings are not your Hawkeye settings.

What it does not do is fix your comp. A Hawkeye with perfect aim still gets dived if his team leaves him alone. A Peni Parker with ESP still needs the nest in the right place. The advice above comes first and the tools sit on top of it. The humanised presets exist for a reason: blatant use ends up in the enemy team’s replay, and a counter-pick that gets you reported is not worth making.

Go back to the table, find the hero that has been killing you, and read the weak-against column. That is your swap. Make sure it does not break a Team-Up, and do it after the next lost fight, not the next death.

Frequently asked questions

Who counters Black Panther in Marvel Rivals?

Black Panther is weak to crowd control heavy tanks and grouped peel. Peni Parker's nest, Groot's walls and The Thing's close-range brawling all take away the space he needs to chain his dashes. Standing near your Vanguard as a Strategist does more than any single hero swap.

How do you counter dive in Marvel Rivals?

Group up, pick a Vanguard that punishes divers, and make the backline hard to reach. Peni Parker, Doctor Strange, Groot and Invisible Woman are all listed as strong against dive comps. A Strategist who stands in the Peni nest or behind a Groot wall forces the diver to commit into a bad fight.

Who counters Iron Man in Marvel Rivals?

Iron Man is weak to anti-air and high-mobility assassins. Hawkeye and Black Widow can hit him at range where his hover does nothing for him, and Spider-Man can reach him in the air. Magneto is also worth noting, since the data lists him as strong against iron targets and projectile heroes.

What beats Hawkeye and Black Widow?

Both snipers are weak to dive comps. Black Panther, Spider-Man, Psylocke and Venom can all reach them before they get a second shot off. Shields from Doctor Strange or Magneto also blank a sniper's value on the approach, which is why Black Widow's weak-against list includes shields.

How do you beat a Luna Snow and Mantis healing comp?

Burst them down or dive them. Both Luna Snow and Mantis are listed as weak against burst assassins and dive comps, because their healing is built for long attrition fights rather than sudden damage. Psylocke, Magik and Venom on the same target is the usual answer, and the Midnight Sons Team-Up is built for heavy-healing comps.

Should I counter-pick every time I die?

No. Swap when the enemy comp as a whole is beating you, not when one player has had a good fight. Check whether the swap breaks a Team-Up your team relies on, whether it leaves you with a broken role balance, and whether you can actually play the hero you are swapping to. A bad counter you cannot play loses harder than a neutral hero you can.

When is the best time to swap heroes in Marvel Rivals?

At spawn, straight after a death, or during the setup phase before a round starts. Swapping mid-fight while alive costs you the walk back and gives the enemy a free push. If the whole team needs to change shape, do it after a lost fight so everyone respawns together.

Does an aimbot counter anything by itself?

It removes the mechanical part of a duel, not the composition part. A Hawkeye with perfect aim still gets dived by Spider-Man if his team lets it happen. What aim assistance and ESP change is reaction time and information, which mostly helps with the dive and aerial matchups where the first second decides the fight.
